The thing to notice: all paid tiers see the same models. Pro+ and Ultra do not unlock smarter models. They unlock more requests against the same models. That single fact reframes the upgrade decision — it’s not “do I need a better LLM?” but “do I run out of requests?”

What that means for the Cursor user: the model you pick inside Cursor matters more than the editor itself for raw correctness on hard problems. Cursor’s value-add isn’t “we made the model smarter” — it’s “we wired the model into your editor with codebase context, multi-file editing, and agent loops.” On the same model, Cursor mostly outperforms a chat window because of context management, not raw model power.

Composer 2 deserves a separate note. Cursor’s in-house model is tuned for the agent loop specifically — multi-file edits, planning, applying diffs cleanly. Pro is the right tier when:

Pro starts feeling tight when:

  • You’re running 30+ minute agent loops daily (debugging, large refactors, multi-file features)

If two of those describe your week, Pro+ at $60 is the rational upgrade. Ultra at $200 is for people whose primary loop is “agent runs all day on multiple repos” — full-time agent operators, not occasional users. For 90% of working developers, Pro or Pro+ is the right answer.

The discontinuity is between $20 and $60, not between $60 and $200. If $20 doesn’t cover your usage, you’re going to keep hitting limits at $60 unless your workflow is tight. People who genuinely need $200 already know it.

Cursor vs GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/month)

Copilot Pro launched at $10/user/month in 2024 and as of May 2026 still costs $10 (with upgrades currently paused). Per GitHub’s plans page, Pro now includes 300 premium requests/month, unlimited agent mode with GPT-5 mini, code review, and a cloud agent. Pro+ ($39) adds 1,500 premium requests/month, all models including Claude Opus 4.7, and GitHub Spark.

The price gap isn’t the deciding factor. The deciding factor is how AI-native your workflow is. If you treat the AI as autocomplete-on-steroids, Copilot at $10 is fine and arguably the saner default. If you treat the AI as a programming partner that you hand off whole tasks to, Cursor at $20 earns the doubled price by being designed around that loop. Anyone telling you “Copilot has caught up to Cursor” is comparing the wrong axes — they’ve converged on features, not on workflow.

For developers already on JetBrains who don’t want to switch editors, Copilot is the only choice at this tier — Cursor only ships its own editor.

Cursor vs Windsurf Pro ($20/month)

Windsurf prices Pro identically to Cursor — $20/user/month — with a Max plan at $200 and Teams at $40/user/month. The pricing math is essentially mirrored. The product difference is real, though.

Windsurf’s signature feature is Cascade, an agent that runs continuously alongside the editor and can make multi-file changes with a more aggressive autonomous default than Cursor. Windsurf also ships SWE-1.5, its own coding model. Cursor’s Composer 2 plays the same role.

In practice, Cursor and Windsurf converge for most workflows. The real difference is feel: Cursor leans toward “you stay in control, the agent assists” while Windsurf leans toward “the agent runs ahead, you supervise.” Different teams prefer different defaults; neither is wrong.

If you’ve never used either, try both free tiers for a week. The choice will become obvious based on whether you prefer to drive or to supervise. Don’t trust online comparisons that score them feature-by-feature — they’re equivalent enough on paper that lived workflow matters more.

What Pro doesn’t cover

Cursor Pro does not include:

Where Cursor breaks down

Honest section. Cursor in 2026 is genuinely good but it has rough edges:

  • Long-context degradation — agents in long loops (30+ minute sessions) sometimes lose track of files they edited 20 minutes ago, leading to inconsistent state. Solution: stop the loop, summarize state, restart fresh.
  • Indexing on huge monorepos — codebases over ~500k files can take long to index initially and use significant local resources. Cursor handles this better than it did six months ago, but it’s not invisible.
  • Pricing volatility — Cursor’s pricing has changed three times in 2026 already. Lock in annual billing only if you’re sure of the tier. If you might need to change, monthly pays for that flexibility.
  • VS Code fork drift — Cursor is a VS Code fork. Some VS Code extensions don’t work cleanly. Marketplace hotfixes lag the upstream by days to weeks.
  • No JetBrains support — IntelliJ/PyCharm/GoLand users cannot use Cursor at all. JetBrains AI Assistant or Copilot are the alternatives.

Cursor Pro at $20/month is still the right tier for most working developers in 2026. Most developers will not exhaust Pro’s request budget in a normal week.

Upgrade to Pro+ at $60 only if you’ve actually hit Pro’s limits twice or more in a month. Don’t preemptively upgrade because the UI labels Pro+ as “Recommended” — that’s marketing, not a workload assessment.

Skip Ultra at $200 unless your job description is “run agents on autopilot all day.” It’s the right tier for power users with specific workflows, not a value tier for normal developers.

Pick Copilot Pro at $10 if you mostly want autocomplete + occasional chat, especially on JetBrains. Pick Cursor Pro at $20 if you want the agent loop wired into your editor as a first-class workflow. Pick Windsurf if you prefer the agent to run ahead of you. The differences are real but they’re about workflow style, not feature parity.

Last considered question: does running Cursor with a local LLM make sense? Cursor does support custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints, including local Ollama or LM Studio servers. The latency penalty and lower model quality usually outweigh the privacy gains for working developers, but if you have a proper local AI workstation, it’s a real option for sensitive client code. For most people, Cursor’s cloud frontier models are the right default.

If you’re evaluating Cursor seriously, start with the free Hobby tier for two weeks, then upgrade to Pro if you find yourself hitting Hobby’s limits daily. The two-week free baseline is the cleanest signal of whether $20 is worth it for your specific workflow.
